Humble Beginnings
Established in 2021 Silk Road Spice Co. has been in development for over five years. Owner and founder Phil Hansen has been working in the hospitality industry since the age of 15, with a few careers in between, initially as a dishy in a French restaurant in Melbourne. Since then, working with chefs all over Australia, he has developed a deep understanding of the importance a subtle, perfectly balanced flavours. Phil first took up a professional kitchen role in a boutique B&B in Central Victoria in 1994, with a free reign over menu development and kitchen management. Silk Road Spice Co. really stared developing whilst Phil owned and operated a mobile food truck and catering business and recognised the need for take home, small-batch spice blends his customers could easily cook at home.
Starting with an experimental Indian blend at home (using a small domestic coffee blender and an old brass mortar and pestle), Rama Masala was developed for his son and has become the signature blend. The Silk Road tracks human journeys of trade and food, particularly spices, back to antiquity, an enticing series of routes from the Far East to Europe. Silk Road Spice Co. has used this inspiration to create an exotic food journey mirroring the smells, senses and adventures of the original trade routes.
